We consider ourselves a ‘Storytelling Early Years Unit’ as our main focus throughout your child’s time in our Early Years Unit is, storytelling. We use the Talk for Writing approach to motivate and excite the children into a world of storytelling which is filled with the best opportunities to develop their Early Education skills.

Early Years Curriculum Intent:

The children in Early Years at St. Bernadette’s are entitled to a curriculum which provides them with the knowledge, skills and understanding to achieve the Good Level of Development. In order to achieve this, our curriculum develops a love of learning through knowledge building, independent exploration, direct teaching and enjoyment.

We strive to develop the children’s vocabulary through a curriculum that is rooted in the highest quality children’s literature. Specially selected stories and non-fiction texts form the basis of our unique curriculum. We seek to provide the children with a balance of real life and fantasy which provides the best opportunities for the children in our care to develop their knowledge, skills and imagination.

Our children come from diverse backgrounds and starting points and we aim to celebrate each individual and provide them with the education which they deserve, building upon what they already know and taking these skills and knowledge to new heights. We promote every individual within Early Years and our progressive curriculum encourages positive relationships between adults & children and children & children, develops team work, persistence, appreciation of others and independence.

Our curriculum intends to provide enriched experiences which take the children in Early Years outside of their indoor and outdoor classrooms. Meeting people and professionals from all walks of life, giving them an appreciation and understanding of the world around them.

Guided by our literature based topics; Reading, Writing and Mathematics are strong threads throughout our curriculum and we highly appreciate that direct teaching in these areas provides our children with the best education and understanding in these learning areas.

Please take a look at our Early Years Curriculum Overview. Our curriculum is planned using a 1-year cycle made up of 3 topics across the 3 terms. The curriculum is progressive in content as well as skills and knowledge.

Included on our Curriculum Overview are the trips/ visitors/ experiences that we are currently planning for the children – these are subject to change depending on availability/ new experiences opening/ children’s interests.
