Upper Key Stage 2

Please take a look at our Upper Key Stage 2 Curriculum Overview. Our curriculum is planned using a 2-year cycle so that the children experience a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum across their final two years in Key Stage 2. For 2021-2022 we will be on Cycle A. For 2022-2023 we will be on Cycle B.

Included on our Curriculum Overview are the trips/ visitors/ experiences that we are currently planning for the children – these are subject to change depending on availability/ new experiences opening/ children’s interests.

Thrills of the Theme Park

In this topic we will be exploring how some of the most exciting theme parks across the world have developed over time.  From the vibrant artwork that adorns the rides to the science behind how they work and the mechanisms which control them.  We will be designing, creating and powering our own fairground rides and using our geography skills to determine whether we could build one here in our school grounds!

Lent Term – Cycle B

Invaders and Settlers

In this topic children will find out more about Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots whilst developing a chronologically secure knowledge of British, local and world history. Children will use geographical skills to name and locate counties and cities of the UK and identifying physical and human characteristics. Within Art, children will begin to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials linked to the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

Pentecost Term – Cycle B

Riches of the Rainforest

In this topic children will study a non-European society that contrasts with British history whilst developing chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of world history. Children will name and locate counties and cities of the UK, geographical regions and identify human and physical characteristics. They will use this knowledge to describe key features including types of settlement, economic activity including trade links and the distribution of natural resources.

Worlds of Wonder

In this topic we will be journeying into the solar system, exploring the movement of the earth and other planets relative to the sun. We will be using digital maps, photographs and atlases to develop our skills of locating the world’s countries and continents. Through varied use of sources, we will broaden our understanding of the world around us and recognise the importance of engaging with some of the most ground breaking historical events and how they impact our life today.

Lent Term – Cycle A

Furnaces of Fire

In this topic, we will discover how steel is made following the journey from its raw materials through the steel making process to its end product. We will use field work and observational map skills to identify how the Steel Works has affected our local landscape. Alongside this, we will explore how the Steel Works has impacted thousands all over the world as well as how it has been used throughout history.

Pentecost Term – Cycle A

Jurassic Jewels and Triassic Treasures

In this topic, we will be looking at the movement of the earth’s tectonic plates across time. We will study various maps of the world and identify key locations of fossils and artefacts. We will also be taking an in-depth look at the Triassic, Jurassic and cretaceous eras and look at the work of some of the great archaeologists in History.
